Quickly Respond to Anomalies with Issue Auto-Discovery

The "Issue Auto-Discovery" feature provided by the Guance platform can automatically identify anomaly patterns from APM error traces and RUM error data, and batch generate corresponding Issue tickets, proactively notifying relevant members.

Compared to the traditional manual Issue creation method, this feature enhances the speed of discovering, assigning, and responding to anomaly issues through automation, helping teams handle online failures more agilely.

Getting Started

Scope and Permissions

The Issue Auto-Discovery feature is applicable to:

  • APM > Error Traces
  • RUM > Error Explorer

Operation permissions: Owner, Administrator, Standard, and custom roles with the "Issue Auto-Discovery" permission.

Configuration Process

Access the Configuration Interface

Members with permissions can find the edit entry and master switch for "Issue Auto-Discovery" in the upper right corner of the APM Error Traces or RUM Error Explorer page.

Edit Issue Auto-Discovery Configuration

  1. Data Source: Pre-filled by the system.
  2. Combination Dimensions: Default key dimension fields (e.g., service, error type) for the current data source are provided. When error data matches the selected combination, an Issue is automatically created/updated.
  3. Detection Frequency: Customize the interval (e.g., hourly) at which the system scans error data and generates Issues.
  4. Issue Definition: Define the attributes (title, severity, assignee, etc.) of automatically generated Issues. Template variables (e.g., {error_message}) are supported in the title/description and will be replaced with actual values during generation.
  5. After configuration, click "Save", then return to the main interface and toggle on the "Issue Auto-Discovery" switch.
Additional Notes:

When configuring separately in the APM and RUM modules, some options differ, but the configuration logic remains consistent.

  1. Combination Dimensions: The system automatically provides different dimension field options based on the data source characteristics.

  2. APM Combination Dimensions:

  • RUM Combination Dimensions:

  1. Template Variables: The title and description of Issues support template variables. The available variable categories differ between APM and RUM.

Using Issue Auto-Discovery to Generate and View Issues

Issue Delivery

After the feature is enabled and configured, the system will automatically scan error data, generate Issues at the set frequency, and deliver them to the pre-configured channel.

Issue Display

Issues created via "Issue Auto-Discovery" use their "Combination Dimensions" values as unique identifiers. If an Issue with the same combination of dimensions already exists in the history, the system will not create a new one but will append the new information to the reply area of the existing Issue for updating. These Issues typically carry special status markers for identification:

Auto-discovered Issue cards include the following distinctive elements:

  • Creator: Displayed as "Issue Auto-Discovery", indicating it was generated automatically by the system.
  • Combination Dimensions: Shows the specific dimension combination that triggered the Issue, located on the card page and details page.
  • Special Status Markers:
    • New Issue: Corresponds to a dimension combination appearing for the first time.
    • Recurring Issue: The same dimension combination reoccurs, and the original Issue is still in the Open or Pending state.
    • Regressed Issue: The same dimension combination reoccurs after the Issue status was set to Resolved.

Apart from the above distinctive fields, auto-discovered Issues operate identically to manually created regular Issues in terms of title, content, severity, status flow, comments, replies, etc.

Except for the special fields and elements mentioned above, other aspects like title, content, severity, status, replies, etc., follow the same logic as regular Issues.
